What Is Torque in Cars?

2021 Jaguar F-PACE

What does torque mean in a car? If you’re like many Marble Falls drivers, you’ve undoubtedly heard this term used many times, but if someone asked you what it means, you might be at a loss for words. Learn about the torque car definition with the service experts at Jim Hoffpauir, Inc.. We’ll talk about what is considered good torque in a car, as well as many other factors, so you can feel a little more confident when discussing torque.

What Does Torque Mean?

What is the torque car definition? Torque is defined as the twisting force that’s created when your vehicle’s engine is operating at maximum power. Engines produce what is known as horsepower and torque, and many modern vehicles can produce anywhere from about 100 to 400 lb-ft of torque. The pistons inside your vehicle’s engine create torque as it moves backward and forward on the crankshaft, which is what rotates the engine and generates the force known as torque. Once torque is created, it’s sent to the wheels of your vehicle through the drivetrain and transmission.

Good Torque vs. Bad Torque

What is considered good torque in a car? As mentioned, most modern vehicles today can produce anywhere from 100 to 400 lb-ft of torque on the Copperas Cove roads. Usually, smaller vehicles with adequately powered gas engines will have lower amounts of torque. Higher levels of torque are usually more desirable for drivers who want to get more power and control out of their vehicles. Most of the time, engines that crank out low levels of torque are less fuel-efficient because they have to work harder than engines that produce higher levels of torque. With higher levels of torque, you’ll also have a smoother driving experience, fewer gear changes, and a faster level of acceleration.

Horsepower vs. Torque: What’s the Difference?

What does torque mean in a car, and how is it different from horsepower? You might use these terms interchangeably, but it’s important to know that they mean two different things. We’ve broken down how horsepower and torque are different through five main points below:

  1. Torque measures the force of the crankshaft inside your vehicle’s engine. Horsepower measures the power that’s transferred from the engine to your vehicle’s wheels.
  2. Torque uses twisting force to get your vehicle moving as you accelerate. Horsepower is what maintains your vehicle’s speed as you continue to drive.
  3. When it comes to towing, torque is the main component that will help you haul heavy items behind you. The higher the torque, the more towing capacity a vehicle has.
  4. The higher the horsepower, the more powerful the engine is and the faster it can go. However, your vehicle relies more on torque, and you should look for a vehicle that has a good balance between horsepower and torque if you want to get the most out of every drive.
  5. Vehicles that have higher horsepower will burn fuel at a faster rate. Vehicles with more low-end torque will burn fuel at a slower rate.
